Gendarme

My biggest fear happened this afternoon.  I have driven through many police stops on this trip...one super big one with about 20 officers pulling all kinds of people over. Today, in the most remote back road you could imagine, I got stopped by a 2 man police stop.  There were barely any cars on this remote road so they pulled over everybody. A woman officer questioned me. I went digging for the paperwork she needed and I found myself saying...I'm American...but in French. I explained that the car was a rental....I gave her my California license  and my French ID. She asked me what I was doing there and I explained I am a photographer taking photos, travelling. She was very nice...

My biggest fear was being asked for my french license...or why don't you have a french license...I have been worried about this for a long time...but when stopped, she didn't ask me about that. I didn't volunteer that I just passed my test and do have a french license. You are supposed to carry around your results to show till you get the actual license...which will take a few more hoops. I didn't bring any of that with me. You are not allowed to rent a car for 6 mos or so after just passing the test...you also have to drive around with a big A ( in a circle) on your car to show you are a new driver...hell no!

The car was rented through a US company ( orbitz) so all I need is a US license.

The Police Officer looked at me like I was a strange bird that happened to come into the picture....she smiled nicely and I was on my way.
