I had, ingrained in me, the love of this music as my Father loved it too. Funny thing is that I don't remeber it coming from him but it must have, He was the source of all things musical and more.
One of the last coherent times I spent with him was when he came down to NYC in the 90's with his group of friends to go to the boat show at the Javit's Center. I would meet them at the end of 34th Street west. They were all instructed to have their exact bus fare. We would take the bus across 34th st. to a restaurant that I loved that specialized in steak...It was around 3rd Avenue...
We had a great dinner and then I would walk them west and north to Grand Central.
It was hot out...the streets were empty...Perhaps the song was playing at the restaurant....I asked my daring Father...what are the words to Tangerine?
My Father was singer ( as I am now)...not afraid to sing out a song,...He gave me all of the words...all was aflame Tangerine orange in the heat as we walked. All the men sang the song encouraged by my father and his elan at just doing what he wanted and not being concerned with what people thought.
I said...why don't we go up to the top of the Empire State Bldg and we did!...with Tangerine in my head and my father in my heart. I still have the ticket! I vaguely remember all of the elevators and the view, but it was humid and empty and I was with my Dad.
I mention this as I heard a version on the french jazz station I listen to...so much more than jazz... and I thought of that story...
if I was to reveal my favorite samba song it is this!
Ague de Berber / Drinking Water
