Street Food Tour in Palermo

Rainy evening in Palermo, what better thing to do but go on a street food tour. Our guide was born and raised in Palermo, his name was Salvatore, named after his grandfather. The first place we went was called FUD where we had a glass of Spumante and he showed us how to do a special Sicilian toast.
The restaurant  had everything english but all was spelled as Italians would pronounce, literally, englsh words..hence, FUD for food...everything there was misspelled...but what about the food you wonder...well, I did not look at the menu to see what they had.
We had a chick pea flour appetizer that I loved...like socca in france...but many people didn't like it. Maybe it was the deep frying in sunflower oil.

chick pea dish...

Then we went to the next stop, a bakery in in Vuccaro...a very old one. There we had a Sicilian foccaccia that I didn't particularily like...like saw dust.

Sicilian Foccacia.

Here is the guide explaining something...he got very fussy when everyone was not paying atention.

we went next door to the bakery and there was this place that served us Madera wine ( Madera is just down the coast)...I liked ths place, it is open all of the time and has a huge window where it serves people on the street. You can drink anywhere on the street in Palermo, just not in glass...

A typical street in the evening in the Vuccaro ( I really need to get the spelling of that down). The guide lives in this area...it's interesting because here are many run down building and then you will see a really nice fixed ud building right next to it...the people are trying to rebuild and there is construction everywhere. I saw this in Trapani too. I love the friendliness and the social aspect of the Sicilians.

After, we went to another restaurant that served food out to the street. We had a few things here...The first was the spleen sandwich which I will write more about in the future. Spleen...I downed one down in the afternoon thinking it was beef but when I found out it was spleen...not keen...I tried a little again but it was fatty and there was no way...yick. I had a man model it for me.

spleen cooking

These are potato croquettes with mint which were really good...deep friend, of course.

Here was some kind of ham and cheese thing fried...more and more fried.
Note the Aussie in the back with his mouth open...he was a character. The other man was from San Francisco and his wife on the right said he eats everything, and he did...he got all of the left overs too...The woman in the foreground is a Kiwi...the Aussie and the Kiwi husband were enacting the on going feud between the 2 countries right before our eyes in those accents.

Lastly we had Gelato..no photo but in Sicily, they have a way to eat Gelato that is interesting. I tried it...They take a brioche, slice it in half and put 2 scoops of ice cream in it. I had chocolate orange and cheesecake...I was told you must always get 2 and different when you order Gelato. It was good, kind of like an ice cream sandwich.  I had gelato all over me which was not surprising.
It was a good tour.,..
