It was pouring in Volterra and I was hungry...so dark...I jumed into the restaurant...a bit higher end then I prefer...charges for water , bread and just being there. You start off at 9 euro just for sitting down at the table. You order a 10 euro glass of wine ( the cheapest was 9) and you get a tiny amount. The service was fantastic. The owner was at the door to take my umbrella...They were very attentive.
I had Picci pasta ( fat like worms) with a light roquefort sauce with pistachios...everything has pistachios now...Normally this would just be the first course...but there was no way I could then eat meat or fish...too much food. I haven't eaten pasta in months so it was filling...I added warm white beans which I love...that you drizzle olive oil on ( and sea salt)...Where I was sitting, I could see out to the outside tables...There was been a large woman with orange lipstick who struggled into a white garbage bag with holes cut out for arms. There was a table of 3 men tht had been there before me...It was a small room so you could hear other people talk. I could hear they were American...I thought they were a group of gay men ( my gaydar is pretty good) but I heard "Cardinal Dolan"...and then I realized, they were priests in street garb...When they were leaving, I got a good look at them in their clothes...it gave me a strange feeling or set a pinball around in my head about the uniform and the man...I said to the waiter ..I think those 3 men were priests and he said YES, they were...they mentioned it.
